"Spontaneous Metaphysical Portraits"

Music/Arts - Performance
Date:
Saturday, May 8, 2010
Time:
12:00pm - 6:00pm
Location:
Postmasters Gallery
Street:
459 West 19th Street (at 10th Avenue)
Description

On Saturday, May 8th, 2010, from 12 Noon to 6 PM, New York-based artist JASON ROBERT BELL invites the public to have him do their “Spontaneous Metaphysical Portrait” at Postmasters Gallery. Throughout gallery hours, in the manner of a traditional caricature artist, Bell will ambidextrously sketch gallery visitors interested in sitting for transformative 15 minute sessions.

Invoking the most primordial interaction of the artist with the public, Bell will engage directly with the metaphysical essence of each of his new models.

This transcendent experience will involve a short interview, an assessment of their morphology, and ultimately a performance of the oldest and most sacred way that an artist interacts with another person: by drawing them.

As with the drawings that are currently on display in the “Mirror, Mirror” exhibit at Postmasters, Bell will be employing his trance-induced hand drawing methods from the perch of his custom-constructed drawing bench and sitters stool. Each portrait created by Bell is intended to reveal the unseen and unknowable aspects of his sitters, fusing life drawing with imaginary discoveries and building upon the psychological phenomenon of ‘first impressions’. Each of the “Spontaneous Metaphysical Portraits” created on this date will be available to their subjects for a nominal fee to be agreed upon by the sitter, the artist, and the dealer ,however that there is no obligations for the sitters to acquire their portraits.

A Portrait of a Portrait of a Portrait
by Michelle Levy

Feeling defiantly fringe-ish in the gallery, Jason Robert Bell’s “metaphysical portraits” are garish psychedelic depictions of human souls. Created frenetically with chalk, charcoal, oil stick and watercolor washes, these deformed apparitions, have a curiously endearing human quality to them.

C.H.U.D. Artifacts

Here ye here ye, my proclamation of all things right and true I give you a collection of found art that I came upon with my good pal dave D'Ostilio, we found a series of wooden objects lightly taped together into discreet singular objects they seemed like something intentional but magically somehow not. We tried to best save the moment. picking up the piles of wood, we laid them out in an impromptu arrangement atop the rusty garbage cans. First the objects were the elements of a city. A child's play game, the vertical arrangements were actual towers making the cities, and the flatter stacks were bridges or water itself. Then dave said that one of them looked like a co-worker of our and we then went on to name the rest of them with other co-workers, which fused with the city, making a new city of little wooden block men. In case, you don't know what a C.H.U.D. is google Ch.U.D./
dave and I are always joking about C.H.U.D.s and we think that these items might be artifact from the C.H.U.D.s from some point in the not too distant future. These are artifacts from the future that are coming back in time.
Once Dave loaded himself up with the artifacts he too became a work of found art. He told me that he felt like a "Man with An Idea" caring the artifacts home.
